“Protect her with your life, guardsman,” the king said sternly. “Kai, isn’t it? You’ll do all right. Go on, then, that will be all.”

Kai wished he could pretend that that had been approval, or permission to do more than just return Signy safely to her rooms, but in truth he wasn’t even sure the king knew who he was just now. He was the only Kai in the Royal Guard just now, but there had been two others in the years since he joined, and probably a dozen in the span of the king’s reign.

The king turned away to the window again, and Kai drew Signy back out through the heavy carved door. The anteroom was empty. He took a moment to draw Signy close, hugging her to him to breathe in her scent and know that his mate was here and safe.

Signy freed her hand from his arm just to wrap both her arms around him, holding on just as firmly. “I won’t,” she whispered. “I won’t choose anyone else. They can’t make me, even if they do send you away. I’ll come after you. I won’t have anyone else.”

“I know,” he whispered back, nuzzling at her silky hair. “I know, Princess. You’re mine and I’m yours. We’ll make the king see. We’ll make everyone see.”
